Woman wearing trousers
Dear Hero
What's the secret to wearing high-waisted trousers? I really like the look of them but when I try them on they just don't seem to suit me. I'm a size 16, with a J-Lo bottom but pretty happy with my figure generally. Must they be worn with heels or certain tops?

If you had a wide, saddle-bag kind of bum or a big tummy I'd probably advise against this look, but there ain't nothing wrong with a J-Lo bottom! However, are some basic rules that need to be followed, particularly for curvy figures, if you want to look good in high-waisted trousers.
Firstly, yes you absolutely have to wear high heels with them to elongate your shape, as even skinny stars like Keira Knightley and Mischa Barton have had trouble looking good in this style of trouser wearing flatties. Thin model types will be able to carry off an especially high-waisted look, one that almost tickles the ribs, but as I suspect you are fuller in the waist, I'd recommend a style that comes just under the belly button instead with a wide-leg or flare to create a slimming effect across your hips and thighs. That said, don't be afraid to accentuate your waist with a belt – you're wearing statement trousers so hiding your middle is a sin!
Wear tops that can be neatly tucked in, to best show off the high-waist, whether it's a cute blouse with tulip sleeves, a tailored shirt, or a simple cotton Tee, topped off with a cropped jacket.

Hi Hero
I want to pick up some bargains in the sales but want them to last me well into autumn/winter. Are there any crossover trends that will work into the new season?

There's a real step change for autumn/winter this year – power dressing is back, with cute LBDs, skirt suits, studded accessories, tightly belted trenches in PVC and lots of dark colours in the shops. Military influences, maxi dresses and 40s Hollywood glamour all make their mark too. Luckily, there remain plenty of cross-over trends. Shift dresses will still work for autumn/winter, worn this time with black opaque tights and minimal accessories. Volume is still a big look, so clever layering, and cocoon, tulip or bell shapes will all work well. Crop jackets will make it through winter, and so will bright bursts of colour, so don't feel you have to steer away from vibrant shades altogether. Graphic modernist prints will still have their place too, so you'll have plenty to choose from in the sales.
Finally, texture will be important, so summer's chiffon, silk and satin will all work with winter's knobbly woollens and plastics. Hope that helps.

Hi Hero
I've just started doing yoga classes and have been going along in an old t-shirt and jogging pants that I have to admit look pretty ropey! I'd like to get some proper yoga clothes that look attractive and are comfortable without looking like a clichéd yoga fashion victim. Are there any good shops or brands you can recommend?

Definitely. Thankfully there are some well-respected yoga brands that still put function and comfort on a par with looks and profits. Prana (www.prana.com) is a US brand that sells gorgeous cap-sleeve twist tops, cotton vests and a wide range of Capri and full length trousers. Visit the website for a list of UK stockists. Christy Turlington's Nuala label for Puma (www.puma.com) , is probably one of the most commercially well known brands. This season the label seems to have moved in a lifestyle direction and isn't very practical for working out, but I would recommend its excellent range of yoga shoes, along with its 'Freetime' bag that can incorporate your yoga mat, if you have one.
Other respected brands to look out for include Venice Beach (0207 907 1648 for stockists) and Manukalife (www.manukalife.com). Stella McCartney's yoga range for Adidas (www.adidas.com) has a massive fan base but, as you might expect, it is all a bit super trendy and you might decide it's a bit 'Primrose Hill' for you. Otherwise, Nike has a yoga collection that looks stylish and won't break the bank, and www.sweatybetty.co.uk also has a dedicated yoga section with lovely draped jersey tops and wide leg pants that will provide the comfort you need to perfect your downward dog!

Hi Hero
I've returned to work after quite a long break to be a stay-at-home mum. The office has quite a relaxed dress code, though there are lots of client meetings so jeans and t-shirts are out. Unfortunately, all my work clothes are very corporate. Can you suggest some good middle-ground labels and looks so that I seem professional but not too City-ish?

On the high street I'd particularly recommend Reiss for relaxed workwear. The quality always looks good, there's a good range of separates, and it's trendy but grown up. Zara (if you're a size 12 or under), Jigsaw and also Warehouse (you'd be surprised) are also worth a gander.
In terms of designers, Paul Smith, Nicole Farhi and Margaret Howell excel at chic casual wear – think high waisted trousers, A-line skirts, pretty cotton or jersey blouses, and feminine knitwear with wedges or flat pumps. There are also plenty of pretty dresses around for summer – perfect for the hot weather. A smart wrap or belted dress from French Connection with a pair of cool metallic flats will also do nicely.
